Preko protein-protein interakcij sodeluje z drugimi transkripcijskimi faktorji, s [[s transkripcijo povezani faktor|transkripcijo povezanimi faktorji (TAFi)]] ali z [[RNK-polimeraza|RNK-polimerazo]]. Ločimo dva splošna tipa transkripcijskih faktorjev:<br />

* faktorje, ki kontrolirajo izražanje posameznih [[gen]]ov in so zato odgovorni za uravnavanje genske ekspresije.<br />

Transkripcijski faktorji so potrebni za pričetek prepisovanja z določenega [[promotor]]ja ali niza [[promotor]]jev. Sestavljeni so iz več funkcionalnih domen.<br />

Najbolje preučevani transkripcijski faktorji so transkripcijski aktivatorji. Le-ti se vežejo na regulatorna [[DNK]]-zaporedja in stimulirajo prepisovanje. Na splošno naj bi bili ti faktorji sestavljeni iz dveh domen; ena regija proteina se specifično veže na DNK, druga pa aktivira transkripcijo z interakcijo ostalih komponent [[transkripcijske mašinerije]]. Osnovna funkcija DNK vezavne domene je »zasidranje« transkripcijskih faktorjev na pravilno mesto DNK; aktivacijska domena nato neodvisno stimulira transkripcijo s povezovanjem ostalih proteinov.<br />
Mnogo DNK vezavnih domen teh proteinov je sorodnih. Domene, imenovane [[cinkov prst]], vsebujejo ponovitve [[cistein]]skih in [[histidin]]skih ostankov, ki vežejo [[cink]]ove ione in se pri tem zvijejo v »zankasto« strukturo (»prst«), ki veže DNK.
