Uporablja se za rast celic, proizvodnjo maščobnih kislin, metabolizem maščobnih kislin in aminokislin. Pomaga tudi pri prenosu ogljikovega dioksida ter vzdrževanju nivoja krvnega sladkorja v krvi. Pomemben pa je tudi za zdravje las in kože. Priporočena dnevna količina za odraslo osebo je 30 µg/dan. Čeprav je pomanjkanje vitamina H zelo redek pojav, se vseeno včasih pojavi. To se pokaže kot: suha koža, utrujenost, izguba apetita, slabost in bruhanje, depresija, vnetje jezika in visok holesterol. Na drugi strani pa meja zastrupitve še ni znana, saj se presežek raztopi v vodi in se kot tak izloči skozi sečila in kožo. Prav tako še niso odkrili nobenih stranskih učinkov. Potreba po biotinu se zveča pri nosečih in doječih materah, body builderjih in drugih športnikih, ki uživajo surova jajca, slednji morajo biti pazljivi, da v njihovih telesih ne pride do pomanjkanja biotina, saj surova jajca vsebujejo avidin, ki se povezuje z biotinom, kar onemogoča telesu, da ga absorbira. Prav tako lahko dolgotrajno jemanje antibiotikov zniža nivo biotina v telesu. Telo lahko manjše pomankanje pokrije samo, glavni viri biotina pa so: sojina moka, jajčni rumenjak, goveja jetra, piščančja prsa, morski sadeži (školjke, jastogi), ohrovt, cvetača, losos, špinača, oreški, kravje in kozje mleko, sir, arašidovo maslo, pivski kvas, paradižnik, korenje, maline, jagode, kosmiči, gobe,.... &lt;br /&gt;
