Skupaj s kriptokromi in fitokromi omogočajo rastlini, da se odzove in spremeni svojo rast v smeri, glede na količino svetlobe v okolju. Fototropini so pomembni tudi za odpiranje in zapiranje listnih rež.&lt;br /&gt;

Fototropini so del fototropskega senzoričnega sistema, v obratih, ki povzročajo različne odzive na okolje v rastlinah. Pomembni so za premike kloroplastov znotraj same celice saj s tem zagotavljajo rastlini večje količine hrane ter močnejšo in hitrejšo rast.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Fototropini so avtofosforske proteinske kinaze, ki se odzivajo in dajejo odgovor rastline na modro svetlobo. Preden postanejo kriptokromi in fitokromi v celici aktivni, fototropini zaznajo modro svetlobo ter celici posredujejo zahtevo za prepis mRNA. Ko se mRNA prepiše se v celični membrani fototropinska beljakovina razvije in povzroči fosforizacijo. Fosforizacija sproži verižne dogodke znotraj celice tako, da postanejo kriptokromi in fitokromi aktivni in rastlino obrnejo proti povečani količini svetlobe.&lt;br /&gt;
