V koordinacijski kemiji se prva koordinacijska sfera nanaša na niz molekul in ionov (ligande), ki so neposredno vezani na centralni kovinski center. Druga koordinacijska sfera vsebuje molekule in ione, ki so na različne načine vezani na prvo koordinacijsko sfero. &lt;br /&gt;

cis-[CoCl2(NH3)4]+&lt;br /&gt;
NH3 in Cl- skupini tvorita koordinacijsko sfero okoli centralnega kobaltovega iona.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Prva koordinacijska sfera&lt;br /&gt;
Prva koordinacijska sfera se nanaša na molekule, ki so neposredno vezane na kovino. Interakcije med prvo in drugo koordinacijsko sfero običajno vključujejo vodikove vezi (tvorbo vodikovih vezi). Za nabite komplekse je ključna tvorba ionskih parov. &lt;br /&gt;
Prvo koordinacijsko sfero v heksaaminkobaltovem(III) kloridu ([Co(NH3)6]Cl3) obsegajo kobaltov kation in šest ligandov amonijaka. Koordinacijska sfera tega iona je torej sestavljena iz centralnega MN6 jedra, obdanega z 18 N-H vezmi, ki se širijo navzven.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Druga koordinacijska sfera&lt;br /&gt;
Kovinske ione lahko opišemo kot sestavljene iz serije dveh koncentričnih koordinacijskih sfer, prve in druge. Bolj kot so molekule topila oddaljene od druge koordinacijske sfere, bolj se obnašajo kot topilo. Računalniška kemija je pokazala zanimanje za simulacijo druge koordinacijske sfere. Drugo koordinacijsko sfero lahko sestavljajo ioni (predvsem v nabitih kompleksih), molekule (predvsem tiste, ki tvorijo vodikove vezi z ligandi iz prve koordinacijske sfere) in deli ligandne hrbtenice. Druga koordinacijska sfera ima v primerjavi s prvo manj neposrednega vpliva na reaktivnost in kemijske lastnosti kovinskega kompleksa. Kljub temu je druga koordinacijska sfera pomembna za razumevanje reakcij kovinskega kompleksa, vključno z mehanizmi izmenjave ligandov in katalize.&lt;br /&gt;

Heksaaminkobaltov(III) klorid je sol koordinacijskega kompleksa, kjer šest molekul amonijaka zaseda prvo koordinacijsko sfero Co3+ iona.&lt;br /&gt;

V kristaliničnem FeSO4.7H2O prva koordinacijska sfera Fe2+ iona vsebuje šest ligandov vode. Druga koordinacijska sfera vsebuje kristalizirano vodo in sulfat, ki tvori interakcije s [Fe(H2O)6]2+ centri.&lt;br /&gt;

Vloga v katalizi&lt;br /&gt;
Mehanizmi metaloproteinov pogosto sprožijo prilagoditev druge koordinacijske sfere proteina.[1]&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Vloga v mehanistični anorganski kemiji&lt;br /&gt;
Hitrost, s katero se ligandi izmenjujejo med prvo in drugo koordinacijsko sfero, je prvi korak pri reakcijah substitucije ligandov. Pri asociativni substituciji liganda se vstopni nukleofil nahaja v drugi koordinacijski sferi. Ti učinki so pomembni pri praktični uporabi, kot so kontrastna sredstva, ki se uporabljajo pri MRI.[4] &lt;br /&gt;
Energija reakcij prenosa elektronov v notranji sferi je obravnavana v smislu druge koordinacijske sfere. Določene reakcije prenosa protona z elektronom vključujejo prenos atoma med drugimi koordinacijskimi sferami reaktantov: [Fe*(H2O)6]2+ + [Fe(H2O)5(OH)]2+ → [Fe(H2O)6]3+ + [Fe*(H2O)5(OH)]2+&lt;br /&gt;

V kovinskih kompleksih 1,5-diaza-3,7-difosfaciklooktanov in sorodnih ligandov aminske skupine zasedejo drugo koordinacijsko sfero.[2][3]&lt;br /&gt;
Vloga v spektroskopiji&lt;br /&gt;
Vplivi topila na barvo in stabilnost kompleksa so pogosto pripisani spremembam v drugi koordinacijski sferi. Takšni učinki so lahko izraziti v kompleksih, kjer so ligandi v prvi koordinacijski sferi močni donorji in akceptorji vodikove vezi, npr.  [Co(NH3)6]3+ in [Fe(CN)6]3-. Kronski etri se vežejo na poliaminske komplekse preko druge koordinacijske sfere. Poliamin kationi se vežejo na dušikove centre cianometalatov.[5]&lt;br /&gt;

Vloga v supramolekularni kemiji&lt;br /&gt;
Makrociklične molekule, kot so ciklodekstrini, pogosto delujejo kot druga koordinacijska sfera za kovinske komplekse.[6][7]&lt;br /&gt;
