Ta pojav se imenuje bioluminiscenca in se pojavlja pri mnogih organizmih.&lt;br /&gt;

Nekateri primeri bioluminiscentnih organizmov so bakterije, morski bičkarji, glive,   globokomorske ribe, sipe, meduze, insekti itd. Ti organizmi so svojo sposobnost oddajanja svetlobe razvili neodvisno – tekom evolucije se je na novo pojavila preko tridesetkrat. Luciferini različnih organizmov se lahko zato po kemijski zgradbi med seboj močno razlikujejo, različne pa so tudi njihove luciferaze, mehanizmi reakcij in seveda barva emitirane svetlobe. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Celice, ki proizvajajo svetlobo (fotociti), shranjujejo luciferin v peroksisomih. To kaže, da so bili luciferini v celicah prvotno verjetno prisotni kot antioksidanti, šele z evolucijo pa so dobili funkcijo substrata pri bioluminiscenci.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Pri eksotermni reakciji luciferina s kisikom se zelo malo energije sprosti v obliki toplote, skoraj vsa se namreč emitira v obliki svetlobe. Za primerjavo povejmo, da običajna žarnica le 10% energije odda kot svetlobo, vse ostalo pa kot toploto. Zato svetlobo, ki nastane pri bioluminiscenci z luciferinom, pogosto imenujemo kar &amp;#039;hladna svetloba&amp;#039;.&lt;br /&gt;

== Luciferin kresničk ==&lt;br /&gt;
Kresničke so najširše poznan bioluminiscenten organizem, njihov luciferin pa je zaradi specifičnega mehanizma reakcije, ki uporablja tudi molekulo adenozin trifosfata (ATP), podrobno raziskan. Jakost izsevane svetlobe luciferina se lahko namreč uporablja kot merilo koncentracije ATP v bioloških vzorcih. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Molekulo luciferina gradi benzenski obroč, na katerega je vezana hidroksilna skupina, in dva heterociklična petčlenska obroča – eden od njiju ima vezano karboksilno skupino.  Pri reakciji s kisikom poleg luciferaze in molekule ATP sodelujejo tudi magnezijevi ioni. Luciferaza katalizira nastanek kompleksa luciferil adenilat-luciferzaza, ki reagira s kisikom. Glavni produkt te reakcije je oksiluciferin, ki v prehodu iz vzbujenega v osnovno stanje emitira foton rumenozelene svetlobe z valovno dolžino okoli 560 nm. Oksiluceferin ima namesto karboksilne skupine na petčlenski obroč z dvojno vezjo vezan kisikov atom. Poseben encim nato regenerira oksiluciferin nazaj v reducirano obliko, ki je zmožna ponovno oddati svetlobo.&lt;br /&gt;
