Celotna reakcijska pot onkonaze je sledeča: onkonaza se veže na površinske receptorje celic tumorjev. V citosol preide z aktivno obliko endocitoze, kjer se izogne inhibitorjem ribonukleaz in prične z razgrajevanjem različnih vrst celičnih RNA, prednostno pa napada tRNA. To oslabi sintezo proteinov in posledično tudi celično rast(primarno blokirana faza celičnega cikla je G1). Posledica tega je apoptoza tumornih celic in/ali njihova diferenciacija. (3)&lt;br /&gt;
