Njihova običajna biokemijska vloga v celicah je kataliza razgradnje poškodovane ali postarane RNA v procesih ki so potrebni za splošno vzdrževanje  reda v celici  &amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;[[Ribonukleaze#Viri|[1]]]&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Mehanizem deluje v dveh korakih [http://accessscience.com/loadBinary.aspx?filename=588900FG0010.gif (glej sliko)]. 1. korak je odstranitev vodikov atom na 2&amp;#039;-kisiku, kar pripelje do tega, da se  kisikov atom veže na fosfatno skupino, kar prekine fosfodiesterko povezavo. 2. korak je vezava vode na fosfatno skupino, kar pripelje do ponovne vzpostavitve fosfatne skupine na 1&amp;#039;-koncu in  in alkoholne skupine na 2&amp;#039;-koncu.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Še tako preprosti organizmi vsebujejo RNaze različnih tipov, kar kaže na njihovo pomembno vlogo znotraj celice, saj imajo te pomembno vlogo pri razgradnji odvečne RNA, kot tudi pri [[zorenje rna|zorenju RNA]]. Poleg tega Rnaze igrajo ključno vlogo pri obrambi proti [[RNA virusi|RNA virusom]]. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
RNaze spadajo med najbolj raziskane encime današnjega časa. [[ribonukleaza A|Rnaza tipa A]] je bil eden prvih proteinov, ki so mu pravilno določili zaporedje aminokislin, bil pa je tudi eden prvih ki so mu z [[rentgenska difrakcija|rentgensko difrakcijo]] določili tri-dimenzionalno strukturo. &amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;[[Ribonukleaze#Viri|[2]]]&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
