Riboza je sladkor s petimi atomi ogljika.  Take monomerne enote s polimerizacijo dajejo RNK (ribonukleinska kislina). Vsak ribonukleotid ima eno od štirih organskih baz:gvanin(G),citozin(C),adenin(A) in uracil(U). Timin (T),ki se nahaja v DNK, ga v RNK ni mogoče najti, kakor tudi ne v živih bitjih. Ribonukleotidi vsebujejo adenozin trifosfat (ATP), ki je glavni prenašalec energije znotraj celice.&lt;br /&gt;
 Nukleotidi so organske spojine, ki so sestavljene iz treh struktur: dušikove baze, sladkorja in fosfatne skupine. So strukturne enote RNK in DNK. Sodelujejo pri sintezi drugih makromolekul. So sestavni deli koencimov (NAD, FAD, CoA) in vitaminov.&lt;br /&gt;
