Za tromboksan je značilen šestčlenski obroč,ki vsebuje atom kisika. Njegova molekulska formula je C&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;20&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;H&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;32&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;O&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;5&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;

==Sinteza==&lt;br /&gt;
Nastane kot derivat arahidonske kisline z delovanje ciklooksigenaze, ki tvori prostaglandin H2 , ki je prekurzor v sintezi.&lt;br /&gt;
Tromboksan A2-sintaza,ki se nahaja v trombocitih, katalizira nastanek tromboksana A2 iz prostoglandina H2.&lt;br /&gt;
Sintezo je mogoče inhibirati, najbolj znan zaviralec je aspirin, ki zavira ciklooksigenazo in tako prepreči,da bi iz arahidonske kisline nastal&lt;br /&gt;
prekurzor prostoglandin H2 za tromboksan A2. Dnevni odmerki aspirina zmanjšujejo verjetnost srčnega infarkta.&lt;br /&gt;

==Biološka funkcija==&lt;br /&gt;
Njegova najpomembnejša biološka funkcija je tvorjenje krvnih strdkov.To doseže s tem , da se ve na posebne receptorje na celični membrani z imenom G protein G&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;q&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;, kjer z vezavo izzove sintezo glikoproteina IIb/IIIa ,ki se nahaja v celični membrani in se je sposoben vezati na fibrinogen v krvi in tako tvoriti krvne strdke. Hkrati aktivira v drugih trombocitih sintezo tromboksana A2.&lt;br /&gt;
