  • The chapter number indicates the chapter of Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry to which the chosen seminar topic should relate.
  • The schedule is provisional and may still change. In principle, dates for topics up to and including Chapter 18 will not change. Please report any errors or omissions in the schedule.
  • The Slovenian seminar schedule is the reference if later changes are made to student assignments or dates. (This English table is a translation of the published schedule.)

Lecture and seminar materials

Lecture and seminar materials are available at bio.ijs.si. The login details are given on the original Slovenian page.

Seminar assignment

Prepare an individual seminar on your assigned topic. Your main starting point must be a review article from a journal with an impact factor above 5, such as Trends in Biochemical Sciences. You must also find and use at least three original research articles relevant to your topic.

The requirements are as follows:

  1. Abstract: Prepare an abstract of 200 ± 20 words on the seminar abstracts wiki page no later than the deadline for submitting the paper to reviewers. The abstract must also appear in your written paper.
  2. Add a link to your abstract in the seminar schedule table for the relevant academic year.
  3. Written paper: Prepare a seminar paper of approximately 5–12 A4 pages, in 12-point font, single-spaced, with 2.5 cm margins. The target length is 2,700–3,000 words, with an absolute maximum of 3,500 words. Include at least three figures, preferably more. You must create at least one figure yourself and explicitly identify it as original in its caption. All figures must have captions and must be cited at the appropriate point in the text.
  4. Submission: Submit the electronic seminar paper by the submission deadline in the table using this submission form. Submitted seminar papers are available here.
  5. Peer review: The assigned reviewers must submit their corrections electronically and grade the written paper by the review deadline shown in the table. Submit the revised paper using the same form.
  6. Oral presentation: Present your seminar on the scheduled date. The allotted presentation time is 15–18 minutes. Both assigned reviewers must attend.
  7. Discussion: The presentation is followed by a discussion. Reviewers grade the presentation and ask at least two questions. Every other student must ask at least two additional questions in total during the seminar period. Record your questions using this form.
  8. Final files: Submit the final corrected electronic version of the paper before your oral presentation on the presentation day. Upload your presentation slides to the server by midnight on that day.
  9. Language: The paper and abstract must normally be in Slovenian. Students whose native language is not Slovenian may submit them in English; they may also present in English.

File naming conventions

Please name files as follows (replace Surname and FirstName with your own name):

  • 312_BIO_Surname_FirstName.docx – initial seminar paper (e.g. 312_BIO_Guncar_Gregor.docx)
  • 312_BIO_Surname_FirstName_final.docx – final version
  • 312_BIO_Surname_FirstName_rec_ReviewerSurname.docx – review by the named reviewer (e.g. 312_BIO_Guncar_Gregor_rec_Scott.docx)
  • 312_BIO_Surname_FirstName.pptx – presentation slides
  • 312_BIO_Surname_FirstName_poprava.docx – corrected final paper (minor corrections)

Seminar assessment

Reviewers grade the seminar by completing the online reviewer report. The report must be submitted by 21:00 on the day before the seminar presentation.

Feedback on presentations

Each participant submits their feedback on the presentation through an online vote immediately after the presentation.

Editing wiki pages

Wiki pages can be edited by their users. If you need help with the formatting, see Wikipedia's editing instructions. You can also open an existing wiki page in Edit source mode to learn how links, paragraphs and formatting are written; then cancel editing without saving.

Citing sources

Use the citation format prescribed for diploma and master's theses at FKKT. The essential requirement is that every source must be identifiable and retrievable unambiguously.
